Four Reasons To Find Out More About Mart Crowley

June 18, 2018

1.) Mart Crowley was best friends with film actor Natalie Wood. They met upon the set of her film Splendor in the Glass and having struck up a great friendship she hired him as her Personal Assistant. This allowed him time and money enough to write what would go on to become The Boys In The Band.

2.) The Boys in the Band was a theatrical game-changer and was the first play to exclusively feature openly gay characters in a non-judgemental way upon the stage in the USA. It premiered in 1968 Off-Broadway and went on to earn five Tony Award nominations. The first ever full Broadway production of The Boys In The Band is currently performing at the famous Booth Theatre, starring Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory) and Zachary Quinto (Star Trek).

3.) Did you know that Mart Crowley's The Boys in the Band had its UK Premier at the King's Head Theatre? In October 2016 a new production at the Park Theatre began with the King's Head Theatre as an Associate Producer upon the show. Starring Mark Gatiss the production had a sell-out run before touring the UK before receiving a run in the West End.

4.) Mart Crowley went on to write a sequel to The Boys In The Band entitled The Men from the Boys as well as other plays including Remote Asylum and For Reasons That Are Unclear… The latter of which now receives its European Premiere at the King's Head Theatre. The play draws, in part, from Mart's formative experiences studying at the Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. The play takes place over the course of an evening in Rome, with the Hollywood screenwriter Patrick inviting Conrad, an American Catholic Priest for a drink in his suite...
