Across a year of mentorship, training and industry exposure, alongside our own freelance work, it can feel like we Trainee Resident Directors here at the King’s Head Theatre have an extremely varied, busy and energetic work life as directors- and we do. But spending a week shadowing our Artistic Director, Adam Spreadbury-Maher, we see that that’s just the tip of the iceberg…
This month, I spent time on a shadowing week, in which I observed what a working week at the King’s Head Theatre means to the Artistic Director.
I started off the week on Monday, in the office. Meetings with Adam included some exciting future programming for the King’s Head Theatre...
Tuesday took us to Bristol for the whole day, where King's Head Theatre show Trainspotting Live, directed by Adam, was opening for the second stop of the 2019 tour. The show played at the underground arts venue The Loco Klub, which is situated underneath Bristol Temple Meads station- a fitting home, then, for Trainspotting.
Wednesday is a day of team meetings at the King’s Head Theatre and a chance to spend time with the entire staff team from the Artistic Director’s perspective - and in the evening was the first preview of Tom Wright’s tender and uplifting Undetectable, directed by Rikki Beadle-Blair.
On Thursday morning, I travelled to Abercorn School in Marylebone, with Adam and Fiona, our Executive Director, to deliver a lesson about opera to a group of 9-13 year olds. The afternoon included a visit to the building site of the Islington Square Project, in which the King’s Head Theatre hopes to move to its new home, right next door, in 2020.
Friday morning, I was thrilled to join Adam at Islington Council's ‘11 by 11’ Pledge Launch - a brand new initiative, promising that every young person at school in Islington will have eleven cultural experiences by Year 11. It was an inspiring event, including talks from Leader of the Opposition and Islington North MP Jeremy Corbyn about the importance of arts in cultural in a young person’s life. The week closed with the press night and official open of Undetectable.
It’s fascinating and incredibly useful for anyone in an arts organisation to spend time seeing just how senior management spend their working time. For anyone entering the industry with the desire to lead a venue in the future, the experience is invaluable.
