I joined the Trainee Resident Director scheme in March 2018, which coincided with a move down from Sheffield to London. I was assistant director on seven (!) shows across the year, alongside other roles, including as an assistant producer. I had such great experiences at the King’s Head Theatre, and learned a lot - and I've been very fortunate to have been working regularly since graduating from the scheme at the start of the year. At the moment, I'm facilitating a showcase piece for a drama school, and this week I've finished directing a rehearsed reading of a very exciting new play at the Bridge Theatre.
Next up is returning to assist director Sean Mathias in the London transfer of his own play, A Prayer For Wings - which comes to the King's Head Theatre at the end of this month. The show transfers from its original run at the Volcano Theatre, Swansea. It's a gorgeous, intimate play with a wonderful all-Welsh cast. I'm lucky to have worked with Sean a handful of times now - first on Gently Down The Stream, by Martin Sherman, at The Park Theatre, my final project whilst a TRD. I also had a small role working with venues on the tour of another of Sean’s shows - Ian McKellen On Stage.
Also ongoing is All That Scratch - which I co-produce with The Other Palace, as one half of All That Productions (a collaboration with another King's Head Junior Associate, Alex Jackson) - it's a curated podcast of new musical theatre, recorded live in front of a studio audience at The Other Palace. Alex and I came to The Other Palace with the idea that became All That Scratch, whilst residents here. We're coming up to the end of our first year now, and our sixth episode. (A plug- fans of musical theatre and/or new work, check out episodes 1-5 on Spotify & iTunes - New musical theatre is the best.).
And, crucially, trying to watch as much new theatre work as possible alongside this.
