The King’s Head Theatre is committed to providing opportunities for young directors to increase their experience and develop their craft. The Directing Programme was created in 1994. In 2002 the Programme won the Queen’s Jubilee Award in recognition of its unique value, for contribution to the arts and pursuit of Excellence, presented by HM Queen Elizabeth II, Lord Attenborough and Richard Eyre.

We aim to give directors the skills they will need to produce and direct their own shows, as that is how most early-career directors are able to make work. To that end the scheme is intended to equip Trainees with producing and stage management skills as well as directing experience.

Every year we take on four trainees for one year on a part-time basis. During their year here, successful applicants will be attached individually to King's Head Theatre productions as Assistant Producers and Assistant Directors. Trainee Directors will attend previews of all King's Head Theatre productions, attend productions outside of the theatre on behalf of the theatre and be involved in all aspects of theatre production. As King’s Head Theatre Team members, Trainee Directors get first hand experience of how an unfunded Off West End venue works as a whole across Box Office, Administration and Production. Trainee Directors will have direct access to the King's Head Theatre Executive Director and Artistic Director in a mentor style relationship, allowing them to be in dialogue about further opportunities and workshops that might compliment what they are learning while working on King’s Head Theatre productions.

The programme is suitable for directors at an early stage of their career who can demonstrate a serious commitment to the industry, whom may have directed some small-scale professional shows, or who have extensive, large-scale student drama experience. This programme may also be suitable

for those considering studying a masters degree or undertaking another type of formal academic course, though would find a more hands-on vocational placement more attractive. The directors will be invited to be present at the King's Head Theatre often, however undertaking external part time employment elsewhere is possible and encouraged.

The Trainee Resident Director scheme at the King's Head Theatre is an educational training programme and is undertaken on an unpaid and voluntary basis.
